Hi.

I am originally from MD, but live in MA now. I dive a lot up here, but am coming home for a weekend (Sept 8-11) and I would like to try a little mid-atlantic diving. From my readings on this board, it looks like the Chesapeake is out, which sucks since my brother has a boat and is just south of annapolis--or is there any diving up that way?? I am used to 10-15viz, but don' t enjoy it so much when it gets less than that if it's a new site. If anyone has any recommendations for dive charters or LDS that may point me in the right direction for a dive or 2, I would love to hear them. Thanks!

I would be interested in hearing what replies you get on diving the MD. area in general. :-)

Hi oceancat,
The pinnacle of diving in MD is the wreck diving out of Ocean City. Plenty of choices, shallow, full on tech, short boat ride 25min, long ride 4 hours. Last wed. i dove 18 miles off shore, and enjoyed 40' vis and a 1/2 knot current, the stuff dreams are made of.
The diving in the bay is low/no vis. It is full of wrecks but braille is not my idea of a good dive. Oyster diving is done during "r" months and is shallow with 10' vis average in 15' of water.
There are many holes in the ground around the D.C. area that people get excited about, quarry's, lakes, ect. not my cup of tea, I prefer salt.
Hope this helps.

Waterpirate,

Thanks for the info--I am with you-I am not so much into quarry diving. Do you have any recommendations on dive operators out of OC? I could drive down there--I haven't been there since my 'senior week' 17 yrs ago--I bet it looks a little different now! I am not so much into going for oysters--I go for scallops up here--they are easier to get because they aren't attached to substrate. Do you need a dry suit off of OC or will a 7mm do? I have both, but don't want to tote the dry suit if I don't have to. Thanks!

Oceancat,
I dive a wet 6.9 9 months out of the year for no deco diving and am fine. The best operator in o.c. is Ted Green on the O.C. Diver, also call pirate water sports/scuba in west o.c. on route 5o for private charters and some other names.
