I am going on my first expedition in December with The Shark Research Institute http://sharks.org/. They need certified divers to help in collecting of DNA and possibly tagging whale sharks. Also, we assist in observations of behaviors and whatever else the scientists/researchers need. You are part of the team and I definitely cannot wait to have an experience above just looking at the pretty fish. A portion of the price is tax deductable at least in the US since a large number of the proceeds goes right back into the organization. It depends on the expedition, but I recommend talking to the leader who sets up the expedition to know exactly what you would be expected to do. It is a working vacation, but for me it is a labor of love!

HAPPY DIVING!
