I was just wondering the same thing about my Mares V16 1st stage and Epos 2nd stage. They explicitly specify not for enriched air, but really... Anyone have any experience with this reg?

Did u order it,like mail order or get from dive shop, they do need to be setup or tuned when they arrive most times. If not it is common for them to free flow, not to worry though your reg is fine but it my just need to be adjusted a bit. Very common thing.
Enjoy diving with it we dive with them here in Canada, Nova Scotia to be exact and in water as cold as 29 degree Farenheit below zero. they work well in cold water and with Nitrox. Also Each year u just pay for servicing usually $30. Parts are free for life with Mares.

Enjoy the reg. I know guys who have taken that reg down to 260 ft, the venturi assist works great. BTW what second stage did u get with it?

Are you sure that's the MR12 Axis? It's an all plastic reg (without the cold water option) and I can't see how it could keep from freezing without some heat-exchange components installed.

Nudi I also have an Mares MR16 with ackros second stage which is almost the same as the epos, have used it many times with Nitrox up to 40%, not a problem at all. Go for it!!

Actually all ours come with cold water option up here, cause it is just always cold. It is this kit, sealed first stage and the tchnoopolymer construction of the second stage that helps prevent freezing or free flows, I also have an Abyss, awesome reg. It has a solid brass second stage which acts like a heat sink from your exhaled breath, never a free flow prob there!

Hope that helps,

Just out of curiosity, my Mares M12 Axis came today and I noticed that the "bottom" is open...there is a cap that covers the outside but in the middle you can see the spring. Is this normal?

That's normal. The M12 part is the 1st stage-a balanced diaphragm. Under that cap there is an allen nut (8mm on my unit). That's were the intermediate pressue is set. The spring balances the pressure from the tank. You can pop the plastic cap off and see the bigger nut that holds the diaphragm down.
