Hi,

Still new to diving, and inhaling everything I can find out about the sport. I'm trying to decide on a BC, and I'm looking at the Mares Vector Platinum, I have 2 questions....

Mares- Highly recommended by my instructor and a couple of people I've met, but I almost never see any mention of their equipment on this site (which I love!), just wondering if there were any general comments on Mares in terms of service etc.

Mares Integrated Weight System: Was really sold on integrated weights until I started reading some of the threads on here about accidental spontaneous release, now I'm not so sure. Just wonder if anyone has any experience or knowledge of their system, not sure if it's the same as Sur-Loc (sp?) or if it's Mares proprietary.

Thanks for any advice,

Matt.

Never had any problems with the IWS. I guess it also depends on the amount of weight you stuff in the pockets. The new MRS seems to be a better design. I have been very happy with the Mares brand and the service and support of the Mares dealers in my area.

I have not used Mares, but I have an older version of the Oceanic OP5k which uses integrated weight pockets. Althought I like the BC, I have had the weight pouches fall out 4 times in 100 dives. Percentage wise, maybe not a big deal, but being 10 lbs light can cause problems.

Make sure the integrated weight system is very secure.

I use a Mares Vector 1000 and love it.
The Platinum is the latest version of the Vector you will have no problems with the Intergrated weights, other than the scowls from Dive Masters on boats ;)

Did some of my training in a Mares Vector 1000. No problems at all.

I now use a Mares Morphos with the same IWS. No problems as yet. Although, I still use a weight belt with the IWS. Don't like having all of the weight in the BC (if you ever have to remove your jacket, you go up; jacket goes down). I spread it around in the weight belt, MRS and the balance pouchs in the rear of the BC (sometimes just weight belt and balance pouchs depending on how much neoprene I am wearing).

Welcome to the sport and the board. Whatever you choose, have fun and dive smart; dive safe.

Enjoy the ride
