I have been diving this Reg. for years. Great Reg. Only negetive is the stiff rubber hose on the reg. I believe the new 52 has a flex hose which would make that perfect.

you know you can get the the superflex hose for the 1/2 dfc port on the mr22 from mares.

From a technician's perspective, I love the Titan LX! It is very easy to tune for maximum performance and deliver easy breathing at any depth or workload.

Thanks for the opinions guys. I've moved away from the Instinct and now it's down to the Titan LX or Mares Abyss 52.
From what I can tell the Abyss is a damn fine reg and I'm starting to lean that way unless the weight difference is a big concern - I'm trying out the abyss in a pool this weekend so I'll see if it feels too heavy. Anybody have experience with that? The 2nd stage is about 100g heavier than the Titan and I don't care so much about that from a travel perspective, just from a whether-it-feels-too-heavy-underwater perspective....from what I can tell that's the only potential downside and I can't afford to go with the Carbon. I'm sure they're both amazing breathers, so from what I can tell it's :
Mares Pros: all metal, rugged, superflex hoses, no adjustable controls (as a photographer I've got too many other settings to worry about)
Titan LX Pros: Lighter, Auto-closure ACD system
Package prices for either of these regs is the same at my LDS, so price difference isn't a concern...

this is my first major scuba purchase besides camera equipment so I'll want something that can grow with me and last for a long time. Very excited to get one before my next trip (curaçao in April) !

Your pros and cons sum it up very well.
For me the ACD is not a feature I would want or need.
The Abyss is heavier to travel with...but compared to photo equipment, it's nothing.
In water weight of the Abyss is not noticeable.....choice of mouthpiece plays the most important role in regulator comfort.

I think it comes down to knobs and travel weight.

The Aqualung.
I'm a service technician, and I think the only real advance in first stage design in recent memory is the ACD system, which I find a really good feature. Plus, Aqualung just breathes so easy--tuning is quite simple. The APEKS and the Aqualung second stages are virtually interchangeable--just about everything except the box and the cover are identical.

I like Mares fins.

The ACD on my wife's Legend is a great bonus for her and saves me a lot of work. I like it and would want it if available.
