Is apnea a type of water sport I've never hear of?

Apnea is a temporary cessation of breathing. The term is normally used in sleep disorders. But I guess it can be used to denote free diving. There is a wonderful brand of free diving fins called Deep Apnea, but they're a tad expensive.
