If your going to be diving cold waters I would suggest looking into the MK17/G250V. I own that as well as an Atomic M1 set. and MK25/S600 and I can say there is almost no difference in breathing or performance between MK17/MK25 when used with the G250V. The MK17 is just a safer reg when going into colder waters less likely for a free free flow.
I have never dove the Abyss so can not coment on it. Also if you find yourself getting cotton mouth. Then De-tune the reg via the adjustment knob. It is very possible that the reason for your cotton mouth is that the reg is flowing too much air which is causing your throat to dry out. I know this was the case for a few people myself included once I swithced regs. I always use to dive them 90% open. Then started getting dry mouth one day and was drinking plenty someone told me to do that So i tried and it worked.
