I like these two regs and wonder what people feel is the benefit of one over the other? -I know a lot (if not all) is going to be down to personal preference as they are both good regs.

1. The Apeks has a crack knob and the Mares is self contained - I prefer self contained.

2. The Apeks is easier and cheaper to work on and there is a technician in our club.

Most of my diving is in the cold UK waters with a trip to warmer places when I can.

(I've asked a lot of questions on another forum about various things and wanted to give them a rest from my interrogation)

Hi JamieG,

have you had a chance to try Abyss 22 and XTX50? If so, do you have a preference and why?
Thanks!

Why do you prefer a reg w/o adjustable cracking resistance? It's a great tool to have in a variety of environments. The XTX/DS4 has been a standard in the tech diving community for a long time and for good reason. Hard to find a better reg that will perform in a wide range of environments, temperatures, and depths. I'd take the Apeks anyday.

i could recommend the
Scubapro MK 17 / G250V
i heard it works best in cold waters and in dirty water too.
its also good for ice diving

I picked up a couple of the adjustable TX50 regs for my gal, although they came with the DST first stage, and are rebranded Zeagle's. So far they have been great regs. Personally I would not dive a regulator that did not have an adjustable second stage. It allows the backup reg to be detuned, then when in use turned up to breathe easily. The primary reg can also be detuned when on the surface to minimize free flows.
