ok hitting the retirement age and looking to snowbird in florida. thinking about marathon. how is the diving there? looking to stay under 100;ft , preferably 40 to 80 ft range. underwater photographer, i like macro subjects. dove a lot of the east coast from vero beach to miami area. dove key largo a couple years ago and was very disappointed. back in the 70s and 80s the reefs were really good. no so much anymore. with the covid hampering my over seas travel, looking stateside. any thoughts?

You will have no problem staying shallower than 100. I used Captain Hooks and had a great week with them. I've seen better reefs but there are plenty of macro subjects to shoot. It would certainly be worth your time to visit and check it out for yourself before retirement.

The reefs in Marathon are not as good as the ones in Key Largo, so if you found those to be sub-par you will most likely be disappointed.

I agree.

By far Key Largo have the best reefs in the Key's and it's a short 3 mile boat ride to the reefs. There are many reefs that are close to each other with a verity of corals and wildlife. Further south you go the longer your boat ride will be to get to the reefs and most of the reefs south of Islamorada will be shallow.

If you a photographer and like macro subjects, Key Largo reefs will give you a wide verity of ocean life to photograph. You will not be disappointed!
