The notch being deeper would only help if the shoulder bolts that guide the handle when it goes up and down have enough vertices clearance to go higher. The slot that’s cut in the reel that guides the handle has an upper limit. I’ve taken a seemed to a few frames to make the height taller which helped with the spool engagement. I think it was a design flaw from the start. The reason the spools get worn out so easily is because of the minimal engagement between the handle and the spool when it tries to catch. It wears the notch out way more easily.Could you tighten the reel a little? Or deepen the notch so it catches better?
This is my improved design. I might even chamfer the bottom of the handle portion of the engagement so it matches the angle of the slot.
