I will be visiting Malaysia and would like suggestions on diving on the western coast and dive shops. I will be staying in the KL area and want to head out and do some diving. Thank you.

Hi kevindive,

Diving in Malaysia is one of the top diving destinations in the world!

The tropical reefs in the waters of the South China Sea and Celebes Sea offer some of the most biologically diverse corals! You have chosen a world-class dive destination and also the perfect months of March and April!

During these months, whale sharks visit us on their migratory route to feed, so there’s a chance to spot these enormous and gentle creatures!
Every year, the whale sharks follow their favourite food, krill, through the protected area of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park! Our premier PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre is also fortunately based on Gaya Island within this marine park too!

Kuala Lumpur is a 2-hour flight from Kota Kinabalu, which is convenient! Before you leave for KK, one of our friendly and experienced Head Office staff at KK Times Square will have an itinerary ready for you to dive the beautiful and famous islands of the east coast, such as Sipadan or Kapalai!

Your dive count suggests you have lots of experience, which will be an advantage for you to experience the reefs on the east coast because the current can be challenging during certain times at certain reefs. If you, or your buddy, haven’t been diving for a while, you might like to have a day or two refreshing your scuba diving skills at our Gaya Island Dive Centre to raise your confidence before an adventure to the east coast!

We offer a variety of scuba diving packages to dive at the various islands, which can be customised to suit your individual needs, so please do contact us soon for more information and discuss with us your idea of a perfect scuba diving holiday in Borneo!

The whale sharks are calling you to Borneo, kevindive! :D

If you are looking for a layed back break then Perhentian is the place to go. Tioman is much busier and feels more like a Butlins(uk) style holiday camp.
The diving of both is very similar. Last time in Perhentian we stayed and dived with Bubbles and no complaints.
perhentian this website is a really good place to start your research.
Have a great time in Malaysia where ever you decide to go.

So, it looks like it will be Tioman, the end of March or 1st week of April. Any recommendations on accommodations and dive centers?

Try my old shop:

Scuba Diving in Malaysia on Tioman Island with B&J Diving Centre in Salang and in ABC - PADI, IANTD and DAN courses, Technical Diving

They have locations on 2 of the beaches, ABC and Salang

I prefer ABC as it has the pizza shack down the end. I know, but when you work in a place you crave western food after a while. Also the Main duty free warehouse is an easy 30 minute stroll so you can stock up on cheap booze!
Salang has the nicer accommodation and is a little less backpacker than ABC.
