If you really want to DIY your dive trip, I suggest diving with Tioman Reef Divers at Tekek. You can stay at their "cottage", Babura, or if you prefer a nicer place, Berjaya Resort (a real resort with pool, restaurants, etc) is a 10 minute walk away just south of Tekek. There are also several other dive shops a little further up Tekek beach. I only know Tekek and Salang. Never stayed at ABC. Every shop dives the same sites but Salang is closest to the better ones, IMHO, but further from the ferry jetty. If you prefer Salang, B&J Divers is very good and I don't think it matters which place you stay there. They all appear the same to me.

Some alternatives:
- Paya beach resort (on Paya beach) has a dive shop onsite, and they are quite good - There is also a small swimming pool and good shore diving if you like small critters
- Panuba inn which is on it's own beach after ABC - They also have a dive shop on site

Dive shops recommended by Zippsy are good, sound advice as well :)

Thanks Zippsy, JMaCleod and Frogfish! I'm off tomorrow on the bus to Mersing and hopefully catch the ferry to Tioman before the tide goes out, so wish me luck! This is my first dive trip in Malaysia and I have great expectations that it will be better than my favorite Carribean dive island Bonaire...

John and Zippsy, thank you for all your recommendations..it's appreciated! Ken
