Hi All,

I'm going to be working in KL next week and after that I'm planing a very well deserved week holiday in Malaysia or the surroundings.

I don't really know much about good diving spots in the area so I'd like to have some recomendations from you the experts :D

My budget is ok but not as big as I'd like it to be, but a nice place with paradaise beaches and dream scuba would be excellent (fun night life would be a plus :)), is that too much to ask???? heheheheheh

Thanks a lot in advance for any recomendations you may have,

Cheers,

There are a number of islands off the east coast of the penisula which might meet your requirements.
Redang is popular, good diving, reasonable busy so night life, some resorts can be a bit like a holiday camp so beware. Redang island - introduction, history, geography, islands in the park
Tioman, recommend you go to the resorts at the north or south of the Island. tioman
You can fly from KL to redang or Tioman from KL, flights cost about 250 R to Redang 220 to Tioman one way. Welcome to Berjaya Air
Perhentian Kecil is my favorite, not so good for night life and further north so more difficult to get to, fly to . perhentian
Tenggol is another option, although I have never been there I have heard that accomodation can be a bit basic. Tenggol Island

There are a lot of small resorts on all of these islands and in many cases you are better off just traveling to the islands and finding somewhere to stay once you get there.

Any of the above would give you a pleasent weeks diving without breaking the budget.
Room with aircon, should be about 100 to 200 ringit per night.
Dives about 75 ringit per dive including rental equipment
To save money and maximise the number of dives you can get VIP coaches from KL to most destinations then you don't have the 24 hour before flying to worry about.
Yes you could go to Bali or Borneo but why not see whaty the peninsula has to offer.

our diving club will be going to redang from 1 to 3 august..

if you are interested feel free to contact us and probably we can dive together

I am also going to KL on business in mid-October and would like to do some diving. I am interested to know what recommendations you have gotten so far. Thank you very much.

You are reaching the end of the season for peninsula Malaysia however Tioman, Redang and Perhentian will all have some resorts still open. You might be a bit hit or miss on the weather but if you are prepared to take the risk then you should get some great diving with no crowds. To save on travel time you can fly to the east coast but it does mean that you have to allow for off gassing before you fly back.
For Redang you can fly to Terengganu with Air Asia or MAS or directly to the Island with Berjaya-air. Berjaya also fly directly to Tioman. There is no airport on Perhentian so you need to fly and ferry.
If your budget can stretch a bit further and you have the time then Borneo awaits, obviously Sipadan, Mabul, etc. I think you need at least 5 days for Sipadan when you include flights and that is tight.
Other than that it is just a short hop to Thailand, I will let the experts there tell you all about it as I have yet to go there.

Have a great trip and report back on your experiences. :D

I've scheduled a last minute business trip to Asia and am planing to spend the a long w/e in Sipadan, arriving from Kuala Lumpur into Tuwau around 18pm on 8/21. Is there anyway to get out to one of the resorts Thurs evening without having to stay in Semporna? Can one hire a private boat or how much is the Helo?

As I will be diving Fri/Sat only (flying Sunday evening), any tips on how to maximize number of dives would be appreciated? If I have to spend Thurs night in Semporna, then does it matter which resort I go to on Friday? Will the dive boats all have left, leaving me with 1 or 2 dives on Friday?

Thanks in advance for the tips.
