I always create a rough dive plan before I start based on my SAC rate and the dive conditions use my computer as a backup to cross check my calculations during the dive, check my gauge every 10 minutes and also use my computer for my safety stop at the end of the dive.

A dive starts long before the dive.

You plan to prevent any problems.
Checking all dive gear before the you leave to the dive site.
Check wave models and weather.
Check ocean conditions.
Dive plan, simple but effective.
Suit up then buddy check, communication, air, gauges, regs, redundant air, weight release, bc, tanks, straps, light ( I always dive with a light for buddy and lights up underwater color).
Deeper, check gauges more often
New buddy, check more often
Surge, larger surface waves, current, poor visibility, check more often
last half of dive check more often
unknown dive site check more often
I leave more reserve air if there are any additional difficulties encountered.

I am more relaxed and have better sac when I plan and do all proper checks.

A good dive is a safe dive with everyone returning healthy.
