Reef Check is a wonderful endeavor, educating passionate recreational divers to collect valid scientific data for use in scientific management decisions and protection of California's coastal resources.

But science isn't always pretty. It's gritty. It's surgey. It's mission-driven diving where nobody usually looks very good because safety and data is all that "counts."

Unless Mo2vation is around. The guy finds the balance and beauty in everything.
Before the end of his first dive with ReefCheck, he'd figured out the iconic image of ReefCheck: The hovering diver, eyes on the reef, slate and pencil in hand, transect line below... making the science happen.

Then he caught it through the lens.

Now, Ken's photograph is the image of California Reef Check, as a full-color, full page "thank you" from Reef Check on the back cover of October's California Diving News!!!

The ENTIRE page!!!! And it's beautiful.

Check it out soon when you're next at your LDS.

Thank you, Ken, for seeing the moment.
This is the heart of Reef Check California.

P.S. The poised and graceful diver featured in the photograph is more proof that science can be beautiful.
It's the director of California Reef Check, Craig Shuman, PhD in Env. Sciences.
Nice!!
