Magdalena Bay

I have a couple of questions on the bait ball action in Magdalena Bay if someone can please help:

1. Is it primarily diving or do people just snorkel/freedive?
2. Are you better off going in a liveaboard or is there also a onshore stay option?
3. Best overall option to experience this?

Though this thread is old, I will post some answers anyway.
The bait ball action is snorkel only since it is fast paced getting to it off the boat and sometimes the bait balls are moving. They are primarily on the surface since this helps the predators hunt and capture using the surface as a ceiling to trap victims against. It would be too slow and combersome to haul yourself in scuba gear. Free diving is not necessary to get good photos and experiences. You certainly can free dive (no rules prevent it) if you want to get underneth angles or if the bait ball is very large or has gone deep.

Both options will get you to the baitballs, The smaller day boats might be more nimble at getting you back and repositioning vs a larger live aboard. I charter land based day boats for years now and have great success
