I'm not a cave diver, so I've got a pretty dumb question: What's the dude doing with the finger spool at 9:30 or so, parallel to the red line?

the video is 8:58 long?

if you mean 8:30, they're pulling their personal line which connects to the line in the system from open water.

Erm, yeah, 8:30 :)

It looks like they're laying line towards open water? Am I missing something?
(btw I won't be offended by a "difficult to explain, watch more videos/take a cavern class" response)

Basically the guidelines start about 25-100ft inside most caves to prevent unqualified divers from following them in. This means in order to maintain a line into open water we as cave divers have to run a line from open water to where the main line begins every dive, and pull it with every dive.

Without going back and watching it to explain exactly what happened, that should give you an idea.
