I'll be interested to hear how a G9 owner responds but for many earlier canons the answer is you cannot. You have to remember to re-press that macro button after a power down. I agree it would be very nice if the camera held the setting.

you sure can. Set all your settings, go into menu, and save settings under C1. Next time you turn on your cam, swivel it to C1 and all your old settings will be there. I have C1 set for macro, and C2 set for wide angle.

hope this helps.

I just returned from Little Cayman and used my new G9 for the first time. You will have to get out of scene mode to be able to change your settings and save them. I ran most of my shooting with Aperture Priority (F8.0) and that worked great. For shooting fish, I went into Shutter Speed Priority and set it around 1/125 which caught the quick moving fish. In any of what they call the creative modes, M, Av, Tv or P, you can set what ever you want and them save the setting to C1 or C2.
