Thanks for finding that blog and posting the link.

Scuba Junkies and SMART are not the same resort. Looks like it was Scuba Junkies that burned.

Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Glad to hear that nobody was hurt. My commiserations for the team at Scuba Junkies. Hope you are fully up and running again soon!

OMG! That is so sad!!! Such a shame... Those new (2y/o?) rooms were quite nice! I think SJ just put up photos of their Mabul Beach Resort up on their website & this happened... sigh...

Remembering how it used to look like:

I was just there at Mabul- it wasn't the bungalows pictured but the dorm. It went up around 7-30pm just as a group from our DC was coming up from a night dive in front. There was nothing to do- the wood caught and in 10mins it was gutted. The resort shut down the few days we were there.

Didn't take photos but it was burnt to the ground. Luckily the neighbouring village didn't catch as they had some strong winds that night. There are no fire services on the island- just an improvised bucket brigade.

Speculation was that it was electrical- people were having dinner at the time but I could also see it being from a cigarette or mosquito coil. The recycled wood used for building materials are old and worm eaten, so even when it's wet from rain, it burns very quickly.

Oh, the dorms are behind the restaurant building? Means a long way from the beach...
