i'm slowly learning about tanks, the different types, sizes, etc. but i'm still trying to find my way around what is a "reasonable price" for the various tank options. i came across a deal for two luxfer al80's manufactured in 1993, with current VIP and hydro dated 6/13, for $109 each. is that a reasonable price? i offered $160 for both, thinking that was reasonable to me. but maybe that was a lowball offer?

Build in 1993 means it's got the good alloy. Current VIP and Hydro means you can't really adjust the price for bringing it into service.

I wouldn't say your price is a "low ball" but you could come up to $100-$120 and still be getting a fair deal. So yes, I think $109 is fair. Especially if it comes with DIN/PRO valves.

it's definitely not a DIN, so i assume it's a standard yoke that's not interchangeable.

There's nothing "wrong" with Yoke. For me, I've standardized around DIN so for me I like the $80 so when I spend another $40 on a DIN valve I'm back to $120. For a typical diver who doesn't care about DIN, the price of $109 is fair.

New, those tanks probably cost about $120 each. Your offer is fair. If it is also competitive, you may have a couple good tanks.

You mean back in 1993 they cost $120 new? I'd love to know where you can find a new 80 for $120 today. Best I see is $150 + $20 shipping.

thanks for the feedback. currently, scubatoys shows $180 and divegearexpress shows $220 for a new AL80. if i go with "half off new" to determine a starting price for used, that puts it around $90-110.

I recently bought 4 al80's used with current hydro and vip for 80each. I wouldn't spend more than that.

I think the price is fair, but not great. If I'm buying used, I look for about half of new price which would put it in the $80-$110 range. They do have a very recent hydro which is good. Hopefully they take you up on your offer for $160 for both.
