as far as i know it is. originally i thought it was trash due to the color, but once i approached it it looked very much like an urchin. my wife came and looked at it as well and we sat there and wondered what it was. it has a base to it, albeit not a large one. if i had a better camera then maybe i could get a more fruitful photograph.
 
Yes, urchins are known to do that from time to time. Reason is unknown. Cool photo!
