I'm pretty new to diving and recently purchased my first scuba setup. I'm from Minnesota and sometimes dive in as little as 4 feet of vis. I'm looking for light which wouldn't be overkill for some extra light during daytime diving, but would work for the occassional night dive. I would like something with a good battery life. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Around here the most popular low-vis light is the UK Light Cannon (HID) amongst the recreational crowd. The more serious divers use canister lights with a focusable or 6-degree fixed light head.

Basically, HID light cuts through murk better than does halogen light ... not only so you can see better, but so you can be seen better. And since murk us caused by suspended particles in the water, the narrower the beam, the less backscatter you'll have to contend with ... since you're from MN, you'll understand the analogy of backscatter as something like driving in a snowstorm with your high beams on ...
