I've done both. I used to have my DS hose clipped to my HP, but now prefer to take it off and plug the port. I store my DS hose with the DS as I'm a master at losing stuff!!
 
Even if you're not diving wet, the LP hose is handy for blowing a lift bag or SMB. I just tuck it between the tank and the wing until I need it.
 
I leave it on all the time. Don't bother taking it off if I'm diving wet. The standard length is actually long enough that you should be able to just tuck it into your waist belt.
