I'm interested in planning a shore dive trip to Kona, my first trip to Hawaii and I'm really frustrated. I want to stay somewhere colorful, preferably 1950's style or hip modern, with either excellent high modern taste or fabulous kitch tiki-tacky. Everything I see online looks as bland and biege as middle america. AAAaarg. Even the b&bs have WHITE WALLS and pale tepid washed out print bed spreads and icky fake traditional furniture.

Please help me if you know where to find the lost world of turquiose walls, tiki gods, LOUD floral prints, fat real rattan, wall mounted broken surfboards, and faded hula girl pin-ups. Especially if locataed in a vintage motel, hotel or B&B! Oh Hawaii, are you really lost to the tepid blandness that is swallowing the rest of America? Tell me it's not so!

About the closest I can come up with is Uncle Billy's.

It's located in the middle of town, convenient for shopping and diving. They have a tacky, nightly hula show that you will love. It's relatively inexpensive, especially compared to the other hotels nearby. I stayed there the last two times I was in Kona. I rented two tanks and hit my favorite beaches from Hapuna down to Kealelelua Bay. Check out http://shorediving.com/Earth/Hawaii/TBI/index.htm
for some of the better sites. Alua Beach is my favorite. It's fairly secluded, very easy diving and Garden Eels below 100 feet.

Do what I do, stay with your in-laws. :)

Just my opinion, but Uncle Billy's? Think run down Travelodge located somewhere cool. The hula show would fit the bill though, but otherwise nothing of note as far as kitchy decor or style. The Royal Kona comes closer, but basically looks like a rundown 60's resort. The restaurant was somewhat along the lines of Disney's Tiki Hut, but not overly nice, although the view from there is killer.

I can't really think of anything really cool and kitchy around in Kona. Best bet might be looking around at all the VRBO and B&B sites, possibly Bwana Bob's vacation cottages (not overly kitchy, but definitely hawaianna http://www.hawaii4two.com/cottages.htm) or something along those lines may come closer to the feel I think the poster is looking for.

Thanks for the tips guys. Except for a coat of turquoise paint BwanaBob's has got what I want! Not the cheapest but looks worth it...now if I can get my dive buddy to go for it... ;-)
