Or the local term directly translates to that. I thought it interesting.
The equivalent term in Greek is "Νόσος των δυτών" - 'Nosos ton Theeton' - Divers' Illness. There's no such expression as the English 'bends', or 'caisson'. In medical practice the term decompression illness - 'Νοσος της αποσυμπίεσης' is preferred. (On a side note, from at least mid 19th century, the common expression among Greek sponge hardhat divers for a bent diver was 'blown', but that word is now just an obscure detail of a bygone era).
