yeah, I agree...it's the same old song and dance every year and I get less and less interested as the years go by...new commercials, new intros, new graphics, but the same old shows and misinformation really gets to be bland after a while...hey, I got an idea for 2007...how about "Human Week", from the shark's point of view?...they come in all different shapes and sizes and colors, some are docile and some are extremely aggressive, some are extremely kill-happy and others mean no harm whatsoever, the possibilities are endless!!!...Discovery Channel could survive on this alone for many years to come

You know I agree that some of the shows are reruns. However there are some new ones too. On saturday there is a show on the Giant Squid thats new. The Dirty Jobs one was interesting, I have not seen the Perfect Shark till tonight. God bless my Digital Video Recorder!! I just look for the ones I have not yet seen and record them and sit for 3 hours at night watching only new stuff!! Oh here is a hint, if you have digital cable look at the description of the shows as some titles you may not think are Shark/fish/ocean/dive related till you look up the description.

Most of shark week is pretty lame. I watched the Dirty Jobs segment and found it was very informative.

Hey, to make the show more interesting, they could put divers in the water with the hamburger rubbed on them . . . or chum the surf at Destin early in the morning, you know . . ., before the swimmers get there. Then they could tie rump roast on to a line attached to the rental hobie's. Great fun, huh.

Stan

Wasn't that an episode of Jack*ss?

Shark week just isn't what it used to be. I can remember being riveted to the television every single night, this year I think I caught 1 show so far. Maybe if the Discovery Channel had spent its money on creating new and more informative programs rather than on their Bight University marketing campaign I would have spent more time watching.

Although, I don't think the problem is just shark week, I would say that the overall quality of the Discovery Channel's prgramming has dropped drammatically over the past several years. The only show I watch regularly now is Deadliest Catch. The same is true for the History Channel (except for Deep Sea Detectives of course), Sci-Fi Channel, etc. I think the cable channels in general need to stop spreading their programming so thin, concentrate on their flagship channels, and reconnect with their core audiences.

I am now returning my soap box to the closet, sorry about that.

Was I supposed to be interested in the first place? Looked pretty cheesy and sensationalized to me so I skipped it.

Thats the kinda the point, it didn't used to be so bad. At least it didn't seem that way. But you're correct, now it is.

At least they didn't show that mechanical shark show with the Cousteau kids again.

I've noticed something similar. The other thing I've noticed is there used to be a slightly hit & miss approach to trying new series along the lines of we've found someone who's an expert in making/doing x, lets build a series around it. Now its more the show about x was popular lets build 20 different series about x all slightly more convoluted and derivative - their current chopper based output being a prime example.

I think part of the problem is that you can fill just so many programming hours with NEW shark information. New info is scarce to build a show around. I check the program guide to see what's new - that's all I've been watching.

I did like the Dirty Jobs episode - that guy cracks me up. And it was definitely pro-shark. I like shows that educate you about them and get you to respect them. Not the ones that make them in to monsters just waiting to attack.

I did read recently an article interview with the new head of the Discovery Channel. They are well aware of their problems with programming, and are supposed to be going back to their "roots".

Of Course as divers, we've all seen these shows many times.

It makes the the new ones stand out. If you like shark shows, catch the 2nd week of the new Cousteau shows. Jean-Michel Cousteau swims with a Great White without a cage. It's one of the best shark shows I've ever seen.

What were the titles of the new shows people dug? I'll Tivo 'em.

I, too, plan to catch the Giant Squid show.

How was that one?
