Hello everyone,
I am going this weekend to Islamorada to perform my first open water dive. I am obviously new to the sport and I am very excited about finally getting off my butt and getting certified. I have already started my Advanced class and three of the dives will count towards completing them including a night dive which I am, nervous as hell about. Well I just wanted to introduce my self and say hey. I am also looking for some local ( Jacksonville Fl.) people to dive with.

Hey Stitch. I'm sure you'll enjoy SB and will meet lots of friendly SB divers in Florida. There's a dedicated Florida forum here you might like to check out: http://www.scubaboard.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=55

As for your dives, good luck and have a great time! I assume you mean to say that you are planning to complete your open water course by doing the four required dives and then to begin the advanced open water course afterwards, doing the additional dives you need for that rating. I hope you have some time for just plain "fun" dives to practice everything you are learning.

I am taking a NAUI course, i think that i only have to complete 3 open water dives to get my certs. I could be wrong though. There is plenty of time for me to have "just for fun dives" but i want to get all the possible training before i just dive to dive, know what i mean?

Sure I do! There's always a lot of debate among forumers here as to the wisdom of going straight into an advanced course as opposed to getting some experience so that you can get more out of the advanced course. I think it depends a lot on the student, so your decision is the right one for you, IMO. You will probably gain a fair measure of confidence through the coaching your instructor will give you during your advanced training. Have a great time!

Welcome and good luck.

NAUI requires 5 dives for the OW course, although one of the dives can be a skin dive. Many NAUI instructors arrange for 6-8 dives for the OW course, but of course that's at the option of the instructor. For the advanced course, NAUI requires 6 dives. The dives from your OW course may not "count" toward the advanced dives. Generally, its considered a good thing to have more, not fewer, dives in your courses. While it sounds like a good value when dive stores offer to give more c-cards for fewer dives (i.e., more stuff for the same money), it results in fewer opportunities to learn. When you read through the Board discussions, you'll see way too many posts about divers with lots of cards (paper qualifications) but with few dive skills.

Good luck with your training and enjoy your dives!!

Well I did it! I am now NAUI certified. I did complete 5 dives (you were right) one was a skin dive to practice the rescue portion of the test. I also completed 3 of the 6 dives that I need for my advanced certs. including an underwater navigation, a night dive ( very cool by the way) and a deep water dive ( the Eagle 110 ft ). I did a total of 8 dives and i am already inrolled in the advanced course so 3 of the 8 dives will count for my advanced certification. I am going to go to West Palm in a few weeks to finish up my advanced dives then I'm stepping right in to the Nitrox class. If any of you ever go to Islamorada I highly recommend staying at the Islander Resort. First class everything it was the best stay at a hotel I have ever had.
If any of you live / dive in the Northeast Florida area let me know I am up for diving off of Jax and or St. Augustine.

Congratulations! Enjoy the diving out, and the diving here in Scuba Board
