Why is it that you always see a picture in a magazine or a scuba program on TV and you see the diver with his/her gauges loosely floating or dragging or some other piece of equipment not secured? Wouldn't you think that they would want to portray the exact message that it always trying to be sent? Why show the exact wrong way to have gear/equipment? - Just curious if anyone else really noticed these inconsistencies....

But that's just my opinion.....

It's in almost every picture you see in Rodale's Scuba Diving. I can't figure out if the advertising agency doesn't get it, or if the advertiser just doesn't care.

Yes - that's where I noticed it in quantitiy and forced me to ask this question.

My guess would be that the advertisers / manufacturers want the regs and gauges dangling to give them better visibility. If they were tucked in close to the diver's body they would be harder to see. The focal point of the ad would change.

This is something I really like about DIR Quest magazine: The divers are horizontal, relaxed and they're no danglies.

Roak

I agree that these pix are annoying, but I have to admit it doesn't surprise me. First, I suspect there's some truth to paula's observation that danglies will heighten the visual attention to the reg or whatever other piece of gear is on the verge of being dragged thru the sand or reef. Second, it never ceases to amaze me how even professionals in the dive biz don't attend to the basics of trim & gear configuration. How many times do I see jack-in-the-box DMs and instructors dragging sloppy gear in classes or on tours. Far from actually teaching the value of this, many don't even model it.

sigh

I've noticed the same thing in some of the pictures in the PADI manuals as well. A picture with a caption talking about how good trim looks, but the SPG is hanging straight down towards the bottom of the pool, etc...

Your all missing the point.

They are DARWIN TROLLING. Easy way to get their 15 min of fame. ;)

I've also noticed 'stuff' dangling from the divers that I've seen on TV and in magazine advertisments. It's bothersome to look at, and goes against what I was taught in my PADI OW course. I wonder why pictures divers are shown like that as well.

are the way the majority of people dive.

If you want to see some major league bad trim and industrial-strength danglies, check out the DAN O2 Provider training video. Ugh....
