We are thinking about getting our AOW but I have been reading a few posts that suggest we should get a few more dives in first (new to diving, 15 dives). Also, any suggestions for a Florida Key Largo Dive op?

i don't think it really matters that you get more dives in before the AOW class, but you will be allot more confident and relaxed in the water after it, and you will get a good view at some specialties.

good luck, and have fun.

For Key Largo, look up Conch Republic Divers or Ocean Divers.

The AOW like any other Cert really depends on the instructor first and foremost! You do not need to worry about the number of dives, rather concentrate on finding a reputable outfit with a good reputation. Other than that..., Have fun!

Oh yeah.... I've been out with Ocean Divers and they where a professional outfit.

Thanks, ..I love this board. I will check out Conch and Ocean. Also has anyone driven the "Keys"? We are thinking of driving from Miami down the coast and diving and hanging out along the way. Any suggestions on accommodations?

I live on the other side of the state from Miami. It's a pretty long haul from Key Largo to Key West, but it's a nice drive, and very rewarding.

Key Largo is pretty much diving "Mecca" for the Keys. Diving is very popular everywhere in the Keys, but Largo is the big boy. The only place I've spent the night in the keys are the Double Tree in Key Largo (very, very nice) and a fishing "resort" on Big Pine Key, which was very nice as well.

The drive is great once you hit Key Largo (if you are in a hurry though, you'll HATE it) but there are a lot of nice restaurants and stores on the way down (dive shops!!!) and nice scenery!

In Key Largo, I always reccomend BlueWater Divers, I DO know that they instruct as well.

I use Ocean and Quiescence in Key Largo, but Conch Republic is the best in the Upper Keys.

Cheers.

I took my AOW with only 10 dives under my belt including my check out dives. The instructor said he was impressed with my skill level with only 10 dives but I still got slammed (as well as the other students) for stirring up to much silt. I think there are advantages to both. If you have the opportunity to just dive for a while with an experiences buddy I might lean that way. If you don't have a fixed buddy or your buddy is inexperienced I might look into doing the AOW right away to get some more dives under my belt with an instructor.

Oceanquestdivecenter.com it's in Islamorada and will get you out of the crowed.
