I have about 50 dives and have used the table ever since. I'm now thinking of getting a dive compuer but should I start with the basic cheaper ones or go directly to the advanced but expensive?

What kind of diving do you do? What kind of diving do you want to do?

I believe any dive computer will be a major revelation.

For the slight difference in price, I see no reason to not get a nitrox able computer. It will probably be a lot of time between this first computer and advancing your training enough to need anything more. by the time you need a computer with more functions there might be something new and earth shatttering available or the prices may be much lower, no sense spending $$$ that you do not need to right now. enjoy the diving and upgrade when the time is right.

Almost all dive computers can be used w/ air ( 21% ) or Enriched Air Nitrox ( EAN 22 - 40% ).

It makes the decision easier.

Sounds like pretty much anything will work for you, then. If budget isn't an issue and you want to go simple but also get something you can grow into no matter where your diving takes you, look at Shearwater (new Petrel is about $950 USD, used Predator is around $700 USD). If you like console mounted and budget isn't an issue, Atomic Aquatics Cobalt.

If you'd like to try a computer that's simple and inexpensive, and can serve as a backup later on if you decide to upgrade, I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Suunto Zoop. You could also consider the Oceanic B.U.D. as more than just a backup.

Yes, I've heard a lot about Suunto Zoop or even the Cressi Leonardo.

Maybe I should look for a 2nd hand first and see in the near future what I really need or want? :)

I have a zoop and love it. I just picked up a zoop console for my dad on eBay for less than 250.
