Bajan Diver:
Hi, I'm very new to scuba diving and I have completely fallen in love with the sport, and plan to go as advanced as my body would allow me to.

I would like to purchase my own equipment instead of using rentals. I've just ordered my dive suit, and will be buying a Suunto Viper dive computer shortly.

I would like to purchase my own BCD and regulator, but I'm not sure which brand and models are good. I'm looking for something that will last for quite some time. Most, if not all of my dives will be ocean dives. Can someone tell me what's a good BCD and regulator to get? Also, I've seen some BCDs specify the amount of lift in pounds. How do I know what amount of lift I will need my BCD be able to manage?

Thanks.

Hey Bajan Diver,

for gear I use a Dacor Talon BC and an AQ Legend LX regulator + octo and SUUNTO Cobra computer. I love them all. However they are quite pricey (fortunately it was part of one massive gift!!!!!).

I'd suggest one of Dacor's diving packages, they seem to be the best bang for the buck. They include a BC, Reg, Octo, and Guages (I think). LeisurePro has some pretty good deals on them, they run about $500-600.

enjoy!

if i had to do it over again, that's what i would do.

Go to this WEB site, they give you a break down of scuba equipment and how they perform under thier test procedures. Also, as mentioned above, high cost does not mean best gear...

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With all due respect, Jriderski - personally, I feel that's bad advice. Rodales (shudder) is absolutely horrible at gear reviews.

Apeks go from bottom of the heap to top of the heap in one year, without any changes. Inconsistency reigns. They don't do wet tests on their regulators. I could go on and on...

Long and the short - Rodales has very little respect on this board. Nor should it.

what? why is my signature double?

ok it isn't anymore...

I agree with Boogie711. I wouldn't trust that site, or anything for that matter other than your own experiences.

No matter what someone tells you about gear (we are all biased towards our own gear) you don't know if it is suited for you unless you try it.

I was one of those who bought a cheap ($2000) set up when I was first certified. Since then in the past 3 years I have spent 15x that on gear, and about $5,000 on courses.

Now that's not to say that my gear is "better" because it was expensive, but for the type of diving that I do it was required.
