Hey,

Im thinking about what i want to do for my next summer vacation before i begin college. I will be 18 years old then and i was thinking i might do a divemaster internship. I was wondering the best place in the world to do this...? (But i am an english speaker so that has to be factored in!)

By best i mean: best diving (alot of diving ;)), best quality of education, somewhat reasonable (and affordable) accommodations...or in a region where they exist separate of the program like in a city or something. I would say 8 weeks max since my summer break isnt much longer then that anyways. I guess its alright if its paid (i have to pay), but internships where the costs are partially/fully covered by work in a shop or with classes are definitely ideal since airfare to exotic diving places are going to hurt (i live in CT). The only problem is that there may be less actual diving and it is more likely going to be longer then 8 weeks. I really want to go exotic so maybe southeast asia or something? I just want some top notch diving.

Any info or thoughts would be really helpful. Specific program names would be great! Thanks.

Have a look at Utila Dive Centre in Honduras, that's where I'm going next year to do my instructor training. It's meant to be one of the best career development centres I the world :)

You keep mentioning "top notch diving".

If you want a dive vacation with opportunities to take great dives, by all means, do so.

If you want a Dive Master certification, you should go get one of those.

The two are largely mutually exclusive. Anyone that tells you otherwise is stretching the definitions. Either you are there to learn to be a DM or you're a tourist. Owners and employees of dive centers are likely to disagree.

Dive Master internships are very common and are concoctions of lower level "career development centers" that will use you to do the scut work for their paying guests. That is one way to become a DM.

Utila, as Leo above mentions, is a default inexpensive way to go this route, at least from the US.

Pre-read all of the study material in advance of your trip. Do all of the pre-tests. If PADI, read and memorize the Encyclopedia of Diving. A lot of people delay this purchase and study until they get to their destination in paradise. They then find that their room has only a 40 watt light bulb and that the local bar gives DM candidates 50 cent beers.

CocoView Resort Roatan has a great program. I have talked with several people who have done it and they LOVED it. In fact, I just got back from there and a guy was just finishing his internship up, dived with us several days and gave us a full rundown on his impressions. He couldn't get over how inexpensive the program was overall, considering room and food were included. He was amazed that he got the full meals just like all the guests, in the Clubhouse, full run of the place, and was encouraged to jump on every boat to go dive dive dive. He gave it a thumbs up.
