In our area, Coco Plum Island Resort, Reef's End at Tobacco Caye, Thatch Caye, and sometimes Blue Marlin all offer dive packages, whale shark tours, and diving out at Glover's Reef as a day trip. From Placencia it is a little far to go out to Glovers, probably about a two and a half hour boat ride when seas are rough, whereas from those previously named places, it is about 45 minutes to Glovers and the same distance to the whale sharks at Gladdens Spit as Placencia.

I'm heading to dive with the whale sharks May 9-16. divng with Sea horse and staying at Laru Beya Resort will let you know how it goes.

May 9-16, Diver- $1100
7 nights garden view room at Laru Beya resort based on dbl occupancy, taxes, 5 days diving (2 days 2 tank reef dives and 3 days 2 tank whale shark dives) tanks, weights and belt, lunch and dive guide.

Lura Beya Resort and Seahorse Dive Center

Laru Beya is an exclusive, midsize resort located on seven acres of lush gardens and beach front property on the Placencia Peninsula in southern Belize. At Laru Beya, which in the Garifuna language means "on the beach", you can enjoy your vacation lounging in a swinging hammock while listening to the beat of the waves rolling onto the beach. Laru Beya is also ideally located to facilitate your enjoyment of all that Belize has to offer - snorkeling, diving, fishing, river tours, rainforest trails, Mayan archaeology, and lots more.

We just got back from a trip to Placencia and dove with Avadon while there. We didnt see any whale sharks and it sounds like although the season starts in March, May seems to have a higher hit rate. Avadon did a great job for us and made it a no hassle dive trip.

Hey Ryan,

Thanks for the mention. Was so happy to have you dive with us, and what a suprise to find that you were Rydog! Yes, I think we will stick to Apr to Jun whale shark bookings in the future. We did manage to see one on the surface this past Tues when we went to Glovers for diving. It was spotted just outside the barrier reef well north of Gladden Spit on the way back. Look forward to diving you again when your return to Belize.

Peace - Anne-Marie

Barbara,

If you have some time between diving with Seahorse, you may want to come dive with us at Avadon Divers. We offer some spectacular diving along the southern barrier reef that other operations in Placencia don't do. Our specialty is 3-tank diving to Shark Hole & Tobacco Caye, South Water Caye, Glovers Reef atoll, and Sapadillo Cayes. In addition, we will be taking out these dives on our 46ft Newton Dive Boat that has a totally dry front main deck area, with restroom, shower, camera tables and rinse tanks, and upper deck seating behind the helm.

Check out our website and contact us for more info: Avadon Divers - Placencia, Belize, Welcome

Sorry you didn't get any whale shark sightings. How was the diving otherwise? Did you see any large schools of spawning snapper? Any sharks?

Diving was ok. It really is a deep blue dive otherwise. We did see schools of snapper and sharks near the bottom but were far away since we were at about 80'. The pod of dolphins that were playing above us really saved the trip. Very cool.
