I am new to the site and I am diving on the John D. Gill in july. I am looking for info about the wreck and the dive. What is the average temp and vis in July? Is artifact collecting allowed? Where should I go on the wreck and does anyone have a site map?

I have been told that this is a must dive in NC I would like to make the best dive I can b/c I only go to NC once a year.

Never dove that particular wreck but have dove several in NC at about the same depth and area. The John D. Gill is about 38 miles offshore. I do a lot of my fishing out there since sometimes the Gulf Stream is nice enough to lay a "warm finger" on that sight making temps upper 60's and low 70's (depends on the part of the wreck cause it is a big wreck) Vis out there is usualy pretty good. The worst i have ever seen outside of 20 miles was 20 ft. hor. and 40 ft. vert. and that was about 2 dayse before a hurricane last season :) Who are you going out there with? If you are leaving out of Wilmington I would assume that you would be diving with Aquatic Safaris (I know i murdered the spelling) since they do must of the wreck charters. If so check out their website. They have some pics there I believe of that wreck. If not google it and you can find the NC wreck diving webpage which I know has pics.

Good Luck on the Dive and Breath Easy!

P.S. Forgot to add: This wreck has been down there a VERY VERY long time. I have heard that it is starting fall apart now so I wouldn't even attempt a penetration. Just stick to the outside and enjoy it for what it is.

Yes i am going with Aquatic Safaris, and have been to their site. I got a bit of info but would like more. Thanks for the info.
