Looking for opinions on basic camera possibilities

Thanks for all the input! It seems that the majority hold a view that I had suspected was the right way to go: get the housing! You have all provided me with reasons that I hadn't even thought of to do so (which of course is why I put the question out to the wisdom of the board!)
