I received my recreation diver certification about 5 years ago, but I haven't been diving very often. I have always had a hard time clearing my ears underwater (and in airplanes). However, I tried diving over the weekend and I was unable to clear my ears. A month ago, I realized I couldn't equalize in an airplane either.

I visited an ENT and took some xrays. He said there is lots of swelling in my sinuses and I have some polyps probably due to a lifelong battle with allergies (hayfever). He recommended that I go into surgery so he can cut out the excess tissue. Is this the recommended route?

I know that some doctors are using a "balloon" technology. Has anyone done this?

Or even better, are there any ENTs in Orlando that are divers? I'd love to go for a visit (as long as they use BlueCross BlueShield).

Thanks in advance.

I second the DAN medic. I recently went to an ENT referred by the DAN medic, and he's been great (and he's on BC/BS too). He has told me some pretty cool dive stories, and he also understands not just ENT issues, but how they specifically relate to diving. I am having my sinus surgery 2 weeks after I finish my open water cert. I can clear my ears, but they don't clear evenly. According to my CT scan, I shouldn't be able to do it at all, but somehow I can. An ENT doctor can tell you what issues you have with your sinuses, but I believe there is an actual dive medicine specialty that the guys DAN recommends have. It was worth the price of membership just for that info.
