My wife & I are going up from D.C. to the Cape for a week and would appreciate any recommendations on charters with some of the local shops. I see the "Dive Locker", "East Coast Divers", "Sea Sport" & "Adventure Diving". Any one better than the others?

We'll be staying with friends just east of Hyannis.

I see a number of wrecks available to dive on, any better than others? Also, any recommendations on shore dives would also be appreciated (I dream of snatching lobster...with a permit of course).

The shop closest to you is Cape Dive Locker. They also have a charter boat - the only one on Cape Cod.

If you make it up to the North Shore (Cape Ann), there are a lot more options for charters. This is not to imply that Cape Cod diving is not good, only that there are more charter operations up north.

There isn't much shore diving on Cape Cod since it's a big sand bar, but some people go to Sandwich Town Beach. You cannot lobster unless you own property or reside in Massachusetts and have a permit. If you want to go play in some fresh water, there is Hathways Pond in Hyannis/Barnstable. It's not a very interesting dive, but there is a sunken cabin cruiser, a tractor, a Saab, and a platform to play on.

The wrecks south of Cape Cod are mostly shallow dives with high current and slightly warmer water. The ones north of Cape Cod (Gulf of Maine) tend to be lower vis, colder water, but deeper and more intact. For dives accessible from Cape Dive Locker, the Pinthis is probably the best intact wreck.

yeah, what he said--

I've had tremendous luck with Cape Cod Dive Locker, in equipment repair, purchase and rental. The owner is a very mellow, helpful guy.

There is also a beach off Wood's Hole that divers call "Garbage Beach" which I have not yet dove.

The aqua center in Sandwich arranges charters on a boat called the Hookie. It's normally a fishing charter, but they do some dive trips.

Thanks for the info - esp. the lobster part. I'll check around the North Shore also!
