Hi there,

We're looking at underwater photography equipment, and we're doubting between the cost and quality of (nikon) dslr and a compact camera such as the Canon G9/G10.

As such, we're looking for reference images - so we can see what kind of quality a compact camera can achieve.

Does anyone have any raw files from their canon g9/g10 and is willing to send them to me? A few will do just fine, preferably shot with and without flash and both macro and WA.

Thanks in advance!

You can take pick at my site. All pictures from Rivera Maya were taken with g9.

Regards

Marcin
Thanks, but i'm looking for RAW files - seeing small post-processed compressed images doesn't really help in seeing the difference between compact camera's and dSLR.

You do have a few nice pictures though :)

As has been argued enough, a point & shoot is not a dslr. Something like the G10 though is a pretty good straddle. Here is a link to an excellent review by Don Wan done Nov.08 for Digital Photography Review. http://http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong10/page17.asp
You should read his entire review but this page compares the G10 w/ 2 other p&s cameras (Panasonic & Nikon). He also has some RAW file comparisons etc. in the review that are worth checking out.

Good luck. // ww :eyebrow:

PM me your email and I can email you a few.

I own a G9 (Canon housing and dual YS-110 strobes) and love it and I am not trying to be controversial but I think the idea of comparing a P&S to a DSLR is well....crazy.

While the Canon's are great cameras, DSLR's they are not look at the prices, the fast lens options, the housings and the ports available for a DSLR. Not to mention the camera itself (sensor size, focus speed and low light capability). It is like comparing a Honda Accord to a BMW M5, is the Honda a bad car, not at all, it's a great car.....but it's no M5.

I dove with a guy in the Red Sea he joked 3 pounds per megapixel for his full DSLR rig. My G9 rig may be closer to half a pound per megapixel.

You also mention WA and macro when I think of the special lenses and ports you can get for a DSLR how could a P&S even be in the same league? Even though I have seen some awesome G9 macro pics on SB.....Edtheman, I think? I also recall a G9 won a recent photo contest - just can't recall which one, great shot of a cuttlefish egg.

Of course, in my book, I get the pictures I want with my G9, small enough to go with me on every dive and I have a great small easy-to-carry surface camera that fills my digital picture frame with great family vacation shots. For me its dive first then pictures, so half the dive it is clipped on my waist D-ring......

I put my entire rig into half of a small carry-on duffle bag, can't do that with a DSLR.

I think your question should be can the G9/G10 achieve the shots I want? Not to compare the two, on any measure other than size and price a DSLR will crush the G9/G10.

I just read TSandM's recent post about "being rude on SB", made me regret some of the words in my prior post.....;(

I want to apologize to Chem and others if my post is offensive.

Jorgy, that was not a rude post dude. Insightful but not rude. I would think the OP would want to hear what a G9 or 10 user had to say about actually using the equipment, since comparing files is only one small consideration. (Butt hay, a lot of folks find me rude just posting my SB handle!) // :eyebrow: ww
