Hey all,

As I slowly build up my gear, I found that I should buy my own light since I started night diving. I hope to spend a max of 120$ on it, any suggestions? I looked at the Technisub Mini Vega, does anyone use that one? Are there any advantages/disadvantages of using a gun style light over a cylinder light?

From what I am learning, there appear to be two kinds of lights. HID canister lights, and everything else! :)

The pistol grip lights can be quite powerful, but are usually large and they really do take up your whole hand so you can't multi-task. The lights with horizontal handles seem to be more useful. Cylinder lights seem to make good signaling lights or backups and can be clipped off to your d-ring, harness, or put in a pocket.

As they say though, if you NEED a light, bring 2. Overhead environment, bring 3.

Consider an UK C4 eLED modified with 8 AA cells as described a few messages down. I used mine for the first time last night side by side with a HID light cannon and was very, VERY impressed. The eLED's hot spot is about twice the size of the light canon's and not as bright in the center, but compared to a regular C4 and D4 torch (also used on the dive) my light seemed to put out the most overall usable light. 8AA 1600 MAh batters lasts around 2 hours before beginning to dim, but remain usable into the 3-4 hour range. The best part is that the C4 is small, but has the brightness of the C8!

Regards,
David
