SeaYoda:
Well a couple things are falling into place with the strobe - the short of it is that I think it has a problem and LeisurePro is going to exchange it for me.

It seems as though the strobe is stuck in low power mode - it flashes but the recycle time is almost non-existent even when set to high.

Sorry to hear that.

The two grey snapper were that different looking. The underbelly of the "grey" one is lit up differently enough from pics I've taken before to know that it caught some flash - just not very much due to low power.

Yes, it may have caught some flash from a distance (relative to strobe intensity), but not enough to illuminate it as well as in image #2. If it had, imho, colors would have been more vivid. We both agree on that. And we both agree that fish can change colors quite rapidly depending upon mood or background.

The "reddish" one caught more flash and was in the shadows so even the low power showed up well.

Yup. Image #2 indeed shows some warmer colors captured.

The skate was no more than 4' from the surface - that's where the rainbow came from.

That makes sense to me. Reds and oranges are still present at shallow depths. But like you say, the strobe must have really been on for such a relatively miniscule period of time for it not to have overpowered such a subdued rainbow.

I'm happy with even the results of the low power - I'll probably flash everything in sight when I get it to work for real :D.

Looking forward to seeing more images!

regards,
b

It's not all bad news about the strobe. I at least had it long enough to build the loc-line arm extension and it will be ready to go when I get the strobe back. The fiber optic cable shipped yesterday so it should be here when I get the replacement strobe in my hands. I'll be all ready to hit the water and fry some fish :thumb:.

Sea Yoda!

The fish are moving out??? And that's in Florida... Let's just say we have shore dive planned for Saturday - If I see anything alive other then my buddy (no pun intended) - I'll be happy... And when u r talking about shooting conditions - try shooting over here - in the pea soup...

Again great shots - for some reason I enjoy seeing non-tropical grey/black "boring" bottom feeders a lot more than the tropicals! (Look more real?!)

You need to remember I'm not really in Florida. The panhandle is considered "lower Alabama" :D. We still get some cold during the winter so the fish thin out until spring. Like SBM said, the red tide has not helped any.

The Gulf can also get like pea soup too - hardly ever more than 60' - 80' viz. Average viz is about 20' -30' but can get down to 5' pretty quickly. Diving the jetties here in Destin has the added problem of the tide shifting and brown, dirty bay water replaces the nice blue-green gulf water.

I'd like to have pictures of pretty colored fish, but they are few and far between here. We get enough to keep me entertained but not like the dive vacation spots.

STOP complaining/// All I can say is "WA WA wa!!!" Enjoy - 10-15ft viz is "decent around here"... The best I've ever seen - around 30ft... And colourful fish....?... My buddy's wetsuit has blue in it - does that count? Stop whining - get some more "real" pics - and post (I'm f-ing miserable - had to cancel a dive for 2morow - 4-7ft seas)
