I have seen it posted on this forum that people have x logged dives and x unlogged dives.

What is the difference? I have 92 dives, all logged into my book (when that ran out, I created an xcel spreadsheet) with detailed dive info on each one. Except for my checkout dives, only 9 have been with a dive operation and signed by a professional. Does that mean I have 9 logged dives and 81 unlogged dives? I actually wrote and and self published a humorous book about my diving (mis) adventures, so keeping really good notes was important.

you don't need a dive op or signature to log a dive - you just record it in whatever format you want with whatever details you want....an unlogged dive implies you have never recorded the details of it....

If someone can tell you they have xxx "unlogged" dives, how do they do that? Either they have one heck of a good memory, or they have 'em logged somewhere :)
In my case I think you have the more common situation... I have two decades of unlogged dives, and then about 1500 logged ones. That and a buck will get me a buck cup of coffee :D

I have dived from 1985 till about 2 years ago without ever picking up a log book. When I started I tried my best to remember the past dives and add them to the current PC based book I use, I'm sure I missed a few.

I think my reason for never logging was my Caveman style of penmanship :D .

A logged dive is one that you where you wrote some details down in a logbook or journal.

An unlogged dive is kind of like "I went diving about 10 times last year, and dove 1, 2 or maybe 4 or 5 tanks each time. So I'm pretty sure I did about 100 unlogged dives last year." :)

Thanks...that answers my question and clears the confusion. I wanted to get to 100 this year, but the parade of storms is keeping me from it. I think once I get to triple digits, there may be some unlogged dives in my future

Started diving in 91 and logged the first 6 dives, cert requirements and all. Then, as I was young and carefree and way to busy to pull out a scribe and write things down I didn't log anything. Fast forward to 2005 and purchased dive computer, downloads most of the stuff to the computer, easy click and type...50 dives later....

I don't have any unlogged dives cause all I can really prove is that I started diving in 91 (C-card), took 14 years off and started up again in 2005......Aow in 2006.....

Loging the dives though is pretty neat as the kids are right into the dive and love to hear the storis of my adventures, looks even more impressive when you can show them a profile and what you saw at that depth.....:D

Another way to look at it is in the trades where you track your time to certify or keep a certification. Telling someone you have been an electrical apprentice for 3 years and have 7000 hours means squat if you can only show 2000 hours on paper. Like wise if you are looking to take more advanced diving courses....:no

That being said if you can wire up a building standing on your head or frog kick backwards faster than an olympic freestylist going forwards your experience will speak for itself;)

...ahh, but after the 100 comes 200 then 250 then 500.....i still find it interesting to see how many i do each year....

-either it's useful to log, in which case why stop at 100?
-or it's not, in which case why bother? (Aside from needing a certain number for some classses, but you're already past that for the most part. Or a dive op wanting to see a log with recent dives or dives of a certain type, which almost never happens.)

If you think you will always be wondering how many dives you have really made, it's real easy just jot down date, place, depth, time and you don't always have to write a lot about it. Especially if you've dove the same spot before or whatever and there is nothing new to say.

As I was writing about my experiences, I found that all I had to do was go back and look at the simple notes in my log and then the memories of all the cool experiences started to flood back in. Funny how that works, Rod Stewart said it best "every picture tells a story".
