The one that used to make my favorites list that is now gone is Sabores. I understand that a lot of the staff moved over to Casa Cuzamil, but something is lost, not walking through the kitchen to the rickety tables and plastic chairs in the back yard and seeing (and smelling!) what Mamasita was cooking.

I agree, loved Sabores. I really also miss Senora Grill.....

Let's not forget Prima, even the last iteration. Used to be THE place in Cozumel!
Yes, I forgot Prima - the old location upstairs from Roberto's Black Coral shop (also no mas). The location at the top of El Cantil had a great view from inside and from that one table at the seaside end of the balcony, but the food quality had gone down a bit, IMHO. Didn't I hear that they had re-opened in a ground floor location near the plaza, though?

One thing about the old location, though, that I didn't like was the cigar shop at the foot of the spiral staircase up to the restaurant. It encouraged guys (mostly guys, anyway) to buy a cigar and bring it upstairs to smoke after their meal. Very few things interfere with my enjoyment of a meal like the stink of a cigar while I am eating.

My wife hated that cigar shop....made her feel like it was run by the Mafia! She still brings it up every time we walk by that spot.
I cannot for the life of me figure how someone could think it's OK to light up a cigar in a restaurant.

Prima did re-open on Av 10 - but it was a short life. Prima was great until quality went down, prices went up and he finally got some real competition. There are so many great places now - sorry for those who are stuck in nostalgia, but for those of us who live here - it's nice to have so many great options now.

Sounds like it is time for a restaurant update..............
Sal De Mar has opened on calle 3 between 5th and 10th. I would put it in the same league as 707, food wise, and the establishment is stunningly elegant architecturally. What can't be replaced is the bubbling fun attitude the gals at 707 brought to the meal.
A lot of really good quality restaurants now populate 5th avenue all the way up to O'hanas between 6th and 8th. The cross streets between 5th and 10th seem to be getting more of the new openings as real estate gets scarce. Luckily for us Jay and Cheryl will be down before us to conduct a definitive review of the available establishments. I have never been to a restaurant that Cheryl recommends that wasn't good.

Someone local should make a list of "must eat" places and approximate prices so that when I am there in June, I can try em all, lol. Three was a little place in an ally that took us an hour to find several years ago that was great. I'd like to try and eat there again, it was great, but I don't remember the name of it.
