I will be heading to Wellfleet, MA in August and have been told that there are no dive boats in that area, but would like to know if there are any good shore diving points in order to go after lobster or anything else.

Thanks

Back when I lived in MA - you needed a lobster license - tank marked with your last 4 digits of your SSN - it may be worth a call to a local dive shop to ask... I do know you need a license beyond that not sure of the requirements... Good Luck Diving

There's shore diving in both N. and S. shores as well as occasional lobster charters, but as has been mentioned you do need to have a permit. Non-resident permits are not granted unless you own some property in the state. Environmental police do check divers and I've heard the fines are pretty steep.

The fines are not only steep, but they'll confiscate anything used in the procurement or transport of the illegal lobsters...including gear and cars. Sadly as a non-resident you'd need to either find a local diver to dive with you and lobster for you (and I'm not suggesting you do it and they carry them out, I think that would also be illegal) or buy lobster at a restaurant/store.

The only shore diving I've heard of on the Cape is in Dennis, Sandwich and Woods Hole, none of which are particularly close to Wellfleet. Or that great as shore dives. There may be other sites to dive, but I've not heard of them.

Don't know the quality of diving or lobster diving near Wellfleet... But have read where the Target Ship is a good dive nowadays. Google Target Ship Cape Cod. It's a dive you might want to consider. Best if you have a boat, not sure you can reach it from shore. Word of caution is to note the tides. I dove the Target Ship in early 90's as tide started to go out. It was wicked strong! I do mean wicked! If we did not have our wits about us, we would have been taken out of the bay itself. No lie. Not something to mess with at all.

Take note of warnings for proper lobster license and all other requisite qualifications to hunt them... numbers on tank & flag, size, notch, eggs, etc. The Police are not usually forgiving for any infraction no matter how small. I have been checked relentlessly. They don't fool around.

Welcome to MA! Have fun. Let us know how you make out.
