I just had to post this report about an amazing couple of Dives we did today. As anyone who dove this weekend knows conditions were very good. We went out with Sanctuary Charters (Gilroy Scuba) My friend Mike owns the shop and the boat and he told me Saturday that if conditions were right he had a surprise. Well, conditions were right and what a surprise! We went to Lobos Rocks (for those who don't know, Lobos Rock has no connection to "Point Lobos" it's actually four miles south of Point Lobos) We pulled up in the fog and there were the two big rocks..very ominous and LOADED with Sea Lions! We dropped anchor just outside in front of the kelp bed. The water was so calm clear and just about the time I zipped up my Dry Suit the fog was starting to break. The water was blue and clear...just amazing! As we made our way down to about 107' I was just blown away by the Vis. Top to bottom I would be conservative to say 60 to 70' but when we hit the bottom I could look up and see tons of Sea Lions playing near the surface. We headed for the first Rock and it was just amazing! We have a world class "Wall Dive" right here! HUGE wall with so much life and color all I could think was "this blows away the Molokini Back Wall Dive I did a couple months ago" The whole dive we were surrounded by tons of Sea Lions barking and blowing at us. I actually got bumped a couple times. We crossed the sand channel and explored the other rock and the same thing, tons of life and color and topography to die for! The vis was out of control! If you ever get the chance and the conditions are right you have to see this place. It was my first time there and I'm sure many of you have dove this site but if you havent, definately put it on your "TO DO" list.
A couple notes: it was very cold and it could be extreemly dangerous if you surfaced near the rocks. This is without question an advanced dive site. It's also pretty deep too (110' was our max) so keep that in mind before you actually consider looking in to going there but if you have the experience and the ride...GO!
My point here was not to gloat but point out that when conditions are right THIS is the place to be.
WOW!
