right on, Fred!

Oh no, I couldn't forget it was Fred Garvin. One of my other favorites of Dan was Arthur Mainway, sleazy business proprietor. My favorite product was the Halloween costumes: the black Invisible Pedestrian, and soldier outfit that comes with a real M1 rifle, and Johnny Flame, that comes with the massive Zippo. "Just tie some gas soaked rags on yourself, and then flame on!"

We have a couple of liveaboards that offer limited activities for non-divers, specifically a snorkel guide, kayaking, island stops for short hikes, but by and large, the overwhelming majority of liveaboad dive boats are focused on the divers, so non-divers are merely tolerated. I think this is because a diver who wants a liveaboard experience wants to dive a lot, whereas a cruiser who wants diving to be one of several activities such as classes simply gets on Carnival or something. Cruise ships make extra money from divers, but non-divers are a drain on the revenue of a diving liveaboard since they always get a discount on their trip price (at least here they do).

Thank you for that informative answer. I was wondering....

My pleasure. For my divers whose spouses aren't interested in four days on a boat, I try to find alternative activities that are special to our area. For example, I've had spouses spend a week at a wellness center for fasting and cleansing, take Thai cooking classes, learn how to perform massage therapy, etc. Or if they're really focused on spending time together every day, I have only one main boat (among dozens and dozens of liveaboards here) I use and one alternative that offer island visits, a designated snorkel guide, etc. There's still a discount for the non-diver, even with the thought given to their happiness aboard the boat.

If you've got a group, it's possible to charter a monohull sailboat or a catamaran. I recently had a group of 8, of which only half were divers (2 couples diver + nondiver, 1 couple both divers, one couple both non-divers), and we were able to really tailor the trip to make sure the non-divers had enough beach time, kayak time, snorkel time, and kick-back-and-play cards time during the 6-day trip.

Nope, I do believe you are incorrect sir... "..because I'm Fred Garvin... Male Pros...."
Adjust the trusses etc etc.

Fred,

Here is an option you and your wife may want to consider. SailDives offers one week liveaboard Sail-Dive-Together trips that are particularly suited to couples with a non diver. The
~55 foot catamaran sailboat has 3 two person cabins which go out as a Mixed Charter so you do not have to take the entire boat which, for a more personalized and intimate experience, accomodate up to six guest with 4 crew. Crew consists of Captain, Chef, Dive Master and Rescue Diver. The all inclusive fee covers meals, alcohol and diving.

Activities, which she could do for the time you are underwater, include a kayak onboard, snorkeling, exploring the local islands, relaxing on the beach, reading a book, having a cocktail while floating on a noodle, local land excursions vary depending on which location you select but there are many to choose from. Besides diving you would also experience sailing, fishing and exploring Caribbean islands as this is part of the SailDives itinerary.

You would not get in 4-5 dives a day as the general average is 1 or 2 dives per day but adding rondevous dives is an option that could be arranged.

I would recommend the Aquacat. I did this Liveaboard in 2009 and 2010 with my son and there were several non-diving spouses on board each trip. They all commented at how enjoyable the trip was for them. The 'Cat makes an effort to offer excursions multiple times a day to the various islands, though these excursions are time oriented around the dive schedule so were typically limited to ~2 hours, though if we stayed in one area for both morning or afternoon dives that gave them more time to work with. OTH, I just returned from the Cayman Aggressor IV yesterday; I would not think this would be a good option, the cabins are a bit smaller, and while we did do a little kayaking the only other SI activities involved eating, relaxing, reading, and sleeping. With some unbelievable scenery.
