underwater as much as possible...
I understand the reason for mounting the canister on the right hip area and for routing the cable under your long hose but in some pictures I see of DIR folk with the cable hanging way under the "slipstream" (in the Halcyon catalogue). It seems that the cable could be potentially quite an entanglement hazard ??(please correct me if I'm wrong). Also what is the reason for it always being on the left hand ?? One more question...the goodman handle...I have a sort of modified one which has a flat rigid part that mounts to the back of my hand but then there is some elastic material which wraps around my palm...this provides a very "handsfree" mounting...I've never actually used a goodman handle so my question would be do you have to really grasp it or does it stay nicly around your hand while fiddling with a reel/bag/stage ???

The light is held in the left hand because scooters are driven using the right hand.

Here's a pic of a Goodman Handle.

The "because you drive a scooter with your right hand..." is what I got when I asked the first time, too. Probably a fine answer, but, like I'll ever drive a scooter.

Here are my reasons for keeping it on the left:

#1 - I'm right handed.

#2 - I write in my Wetnotes with my right hand... Its easier to keep the light on the hand holding the book, and write with 5mm gloves with no light on my right hand.

#3 - I use my camera in my right hand.

#4 - I keep the light on my left hand because when I dive with my buddy, I'm over his left shoulder. So my light shines across my field of vision, and spots into his so we stay in touch.

When I use the inflator, I put the light into the right hand, so my buddy doesn't see my light flying all over the place.

I understand the cord coming across the chest area with the long hose seems funky - but it really works fine.

You sort of wear the goodman handle - it stays in place fine. Some (like UP) thumb it. My hands are small, so I wear it like brass knuckles. I don't even notice it.

While that is one reason to hold it in the left hand, the primary reason is that if you go to donate your regulator to an OOA diver you use your right hand. If the light is also in that hand you may very well blind the OOA diver, who is already having enough problems.

Hope that helps.

oh ya I knew that one too, just forgot to write it down :11ztongue nothing worse than being OOA and then having your buddy blind you too.

Having tried both the "soft handle" and the metal goodman handle I would have to say that getting the light off and on your hand to sort out your hoses after an s-drill or any other situation where you need to remove it temporarily is much easier with the hard goodman handle.

The soft handle is comfortable but not as easy to work with in this regard. Anything that slows your ability to react in a correct and precise fashion is simply too much of a liability to contemplate.

In short the benefit of comfort does not adequately offset the lost of accuracy and speed.

Just one guys opinion though.

Wendy - you're killing me! Just when you thought your dive was going bad (like, I dunno, you're out of gas!) all of a sudden ZOT!

Sixer is right. I will take off and put back on my light many times on a single dive - to shoot the cam, if its shallow and bright, if there's nothing to see, if I'm fixing something... The rigid handle makes it much easier to put on and take off. PLUS, if I had to ditch it one handed, I can just shake it off.

My soft handle lasted about 2 dives before I bought the goodman handle. It is much easier to manuver for the reasons listed by D33PS1X.

I probably blinded D33PS1X 20 or 30 times on dives by checking my SPG with the soft handle.

Thank you for your responses...I will be purchasing a goodman handle sooner than later because i have had all the problems listed above...
Blinding my buddy....not being able to ditch it with one hand...
Me be thinking that it would not be hard to make a goodman handle ??? any thoughts ?
