for my powershot...which one is advisable?

I vote NiMH.

For my Canon Powershot S1, I use Powerex or GP or whatever brand 2500 mah AAs. Batteries generally die after a certain number of charges and discharges - AAs are cheap to replace, LiIon batteries are proprietary and expensive, and can get hard to find if you keep your same camera a long time. Plus, you can buy energizers in Costa Rica (or wherever) and use them if something happens to your charger or your batteries.

My two cents.

I'd recommend a set of 2500NiMH rechargeable batteries.
I have 2 sets of 4 Energizer 2500NiMH batteries and with my powershot A610 I'm usually able to take a few hundred shots before the low battery icon appears.
I'm quite satisfied as this is a vast improvement to constantly buying alkaline batteries.
A set of 4 NiMH batteries plus charger should cost less than US$20

As to Li-ION i'm sure that there's some note in my manual recommending against them?

I vote for the NiMh. They're relatively cheap compared to Li-Ions. I too have several sets of Energizer 2500 mAh NiMh batts. On my last trip, was able to use em for, on average, about 3+ dives (although one time they crapped out on me at the end of the 4th dive, wasn't good).

Depending on your camera, you may not have a choice. I'd been a long time fan of having interchangeable batteries between my cameras, strobes, and other devices. Makes things simple. That was ok for my Oly 5050 / inon strobes, and such, but after moving to a Nikon D70 and Ike strobes, there was no choice.
