Does anyone have any details to share about diving at Leo Carillo? I have been around the site w/o scuba (thanks to the 3R's course), but have never been diving there. Any suggestions as to best direction to head, depths, things to see, etc.? My current plan is tool around in the kelp, but I don't want to miss a lovely reef or other interesting site if there is one.

As far as I could see, a lot of the kelp is gone recently.

One way to go is to get Dale Shecklers(sp) best SoCal beach dives -- a great book in general and Leo is in there.

There is a dive spot directly out from lifeguard hut #5 (go out to about 20 feet, drop down and the reef is between 25-40 feet) as well as some diving closer to the rocky outcropping (by the BBQ areas)

If you can see kelp, then chances are there is a decent dive site below it.

Leo is loaded with great spots. You can go out from the lifeguard tower or head towards the rocks jetting out of the water as limeyx stated. Last time I dove out there I went from the lifeguard tower on the north side of the beach and surface swam for about 25 min and hit a bunch of amazing reefs. It's a long swim but it's worth it. I've also heard rumors of another reef on the south side that is way the heck out there.

Thanks for all the info! I actually managed to find Dale and Kim Sheckler's book this afternoon as well (I have been thinking about getting it for a while but everyone always seems to be out...). I'll post a report this weekend.
