I recently bought a Nikon Portrait lense (50 mm, no zoom) and I used it this AM on my D-100.

It worked fine, then started blinking error. What could the reasons be? ...where's Ron?

Sorry, I don't know about Nikon lenses but one thing that can cause this with a Canon lens if it is an older one not suitable for the new digital bodies? I know you just bought it, but just a thought til people who have a clue get here :)

According to Nikon troubleshooting guide:

When you see Err on the control panel, LCD monitor or viewfinder of your digital camera it refers to a camera malfunction. Try the following:

Remove all accessories from the camera.
Install a freshly charged battery into the camera.
If your Nikon camera offers resets such as the two-button reset or a hardware reset please follow those instructions provided in the product manual.

justleesa picked it out for me....

it was working fine--took this of JB at the mailbox

thanks Chantal...I will do that again.

I took the battery out (like you do a cell phone), and I hit the buttons that put you back on default.

Thanks..I can't find my english manual...

Also..maybe my lense 12-24 IS dirty..thought it was my CCD, but this shot looks free of the milky wash I was seeing with the other lense. So...how do you guys clean your lenses? Oh...my housing is fine after the heat stroke it suffered. (whew, close call)

I use one of the lint free lens cleaning cloths. No troubles yet :)

Hope the reset works! I have an old lens that will work for a few frames and then I get the error message with it. It's not compatible with the new system, but it takes the camera a while to figure it out LOL

Congrats on the good news about your housing.

Here's a link to the manual online:

I keep a copy on my computer hard drive, since I can't seem to keep track of my manuals, either.

thanks girls!

I think you might be on to something...that's exactly what happened.

yay...now I have a manual again.

I think it would have to be a really, really old Nikon lens if it was a compatability problem. When I was shooting Nikon digital I would routinely use old manual focus lenses with it. But I wasn't using a D100. So that's definately something to check.

If you're using any autofocus 50mm that should not be a problem. I'd check your battery. It's not uncommon to get a bad battery, even a fairly new one, that won't take a full charge. These can give you camera errors. I've had this happen with Nikon and Canon cameras.

I have one battery for my Canon 20D that works fine topside but everytime I take it UW, fully charged no less, I get an error message on my camera and it quits working. This is why I label all my batteries. Makes it easy to remember if one is quirky, needs replaced, charged, etc.

Good luck

okay...switched batteries to fresh newly charged...the camera works fine with my other lenses, but not the new one.

Guess, I can e-mail Nikon on their site? It WAS working.
