Is it necessary to use the LED 500 in a corded configuration in order to use the Goodman mount?

I know the Goodman mount is usually used corded, but as a purely recreational diver, I'm considering it primarily for use in handheld mode as my always-carry, occasionally-use light for looking under ledges, etc. but would also like to use it Goodman-style on night dives, wrecks, or the occasional cavern, etc., where I would need the light the entire dive.

So, I'm just wondering if it's possible to use the Goodman mount with the LED 500 in handheld configuration, even if it's a little awkward. At eight inches long, I imagine you would have to clamp it near the back and it would protrude forward quite a bit. Or clamp it in the middle and put up with not being able to bend your wrist back. Is this even possible?

Well...I have used the goodman handle on a corded LED 500 and that was long enough to almost be awkward.

If you decide to do it, use a zip tie to secure a snap on goodman handle to the light to keep from popping the light off the handle.

I dive a LED 500 (no cord) on the elastic goodman handle all the time. However, I have done a couple things to make it work better. First, I unscrewed the white plastic clip from the handle and screwed the handle (black plastic plate and elastic strap) directly to the light. I had to buy a couple short stainless screws to do this. The body of the light already has threaded holes, but they aren't deep enough for the screws that come with the handle. The only other thing I did is put a loop of 1/8" bungie around the middle of the light and my wrist. That keeps the back end of the light from moving around too much.

Would the LED 500 with / or without the goodman handle be a decent primary light?

I'm not ready to buy a dedicated canister light, and I'm trying to find something that would be a good primary and travel solution. The optional corded adapter that turns the flashlight into a canister light looks like it might be a good alternative. Conditions: day & night diving in clear and warm water.

Thanks!

Sounds like you're considering the LED 500 for similar uses to mine. I think, for our purposes, it could be a great primary light.

Cavers may need something more serious, but I think just the 500 will do fine for me (with a small backup light of course).

i leave the goodman handle on and use the light with it when i "switch back" from corded to handheld.

Is there a specific goodman handle that Dive Rite makes for the LED 500? It was not obvious to me looking at the product info online. If not, is there a goodman design that others have found that works well with this light?

Fritz, how has your experience been with the LED 500 in FL open water dives?

Thanks!

Oh, I don't have one yet. Considering it. That's why I wanted to raise the question here. ;)
